H.I. not A.I—#buchbrauchtmensch Books Need Huma H.I. not A.I—#buchbrauchtmensch Books Need Humans Need Books On Friday, November 15th, we, the Illustrators of Germany, took back our space. On Instagram with the hashtag #buchbrauchtmensch (books need humans—humans need books) we showed the faces behind those beautiful, delightful, illustrations that you enjoy every day. The faces AND the intelligence behind those powerful pictures. Why should you care about generative artificial intelligence in illustration? Generative Artificial Intelligence is a misnomer. It can only function when it uses something that already exists. It is kind of like a meat grinder, only with content that’s been stolen and scraped without getting permission from the creators and copyright holders. That is kind of like coming home from vacation to find your most valuable possession missing - stolen - and being sold on E-Bay to the next best bidder, who may, or may not know how to use it. My most cherished possession is my human intelligence. My super power is my ability to create complicated, yet clarifying, delightful images. And I have been stolen from for training generative artificial intelligence. The tools I use (@adobe … I am pointing my finger at you) offer the public a generative artificial intelligence interface. YAY! Free or cheap art. Kind of like stock photos, used without thought, »image to get attention«. That really devalues the work that we, the illustrators, do, by stealing not just images, but our styles, our voices. (And it doesn't speak well for your value, either) An illustration isn’t just a pretty picture. An illustration isn’t just to get attention An illustration is a process to illuminate a thought, a body of work, a feeling. Illustration is Communication. Join us in communicating how important it is to use original art. If you are a children’s book illustrator, publisher or art buyer, post a picture of yourself with your favorite work with the hashtag #buchbrauchtmensch and if you want, #booksneedhumans and show your support for Human Intelligence AND feel free to share this post.
How the World 🌍 Did I End up Here? As an Illust How the World 🌍 Did I End up Here? As an Illustrator? 👩‍🎨 In Germany? 🇩🇪 It is, I suppose, a very good question. I never started out wanting to be an illustrator. My teenage self wanted to become a fashion designer. And my teenage self wanted to go to Parsons School of Design. Even though my high school art teacher told me I couldn’t draw, I proved to him that I could, and got accepted to Parsons. However, Timm Gunn (you might know him from »Fashion Runway« was the admissions officer at the time (yes, I knew a famous person - and actually had a student job in the admissions office). He didn’t see me as a fashion designer and suggested fashion illustration instead. But that felt too specialized to me, (and to my mother who thought I should study something sensible) so I majored in Illustration. Little did I know at the time that most illustration work is freelance. But that is ok, because although I love to collaborate with others, I like having the freedom of creative control, the ability to implement what will work best for my client. My search-and-find (hidden object) story books are like that. My publisher hands me a theme and lets me run with it. I deep dive and research, sketch, discuss, toss ideas back and forth and then show the brilliant facets of my client’s theme. All in one fun and whimsically detailed illustration. For example, did you know that storks were not native to Germany? They followed the path of the Roman Empire! Naturally, I have to, just have to, illustrate that in my historical book about Stuttgart, »Historischer Wimmelspaß in Stuttgart«, which will be coming out in early 2025. I am also not native to Germany. My Grandfather was. And my Grandmother’s parents were. Which brings me to a longer story to how I ended up in Germany. I’ll save that for another day. And if Timm Gunn is out there listening—Thanks, Timm! Illustration is the best job in the world. I wouldn’t want any other. 👩‍🎨❤️⭐️

If your brand informs, animates, and entertains others, it’s time to pool our creative visions. Thanks AOI and Nicola from The Brandwarrior for the fun workshop. It was refreshing to re-explore my personal vision, testing how my brand vision has grown, and if it has changed, even ever so slightly.
